Ron Bone: Modern Master of Domestic Painting

Explore the exquisitely detailed artwork of a leading British painter and modern master of the domestic scene.

Ron Bone (1950-2011) was born in Country Durham and studied at both the Royal College of Art and Bath Academy of Art. After a career in teaching, film and television, he turned to painting and found considerable success in New York and London.

Bone has featured in group shows at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, and his paintings are held in private collections around the world.

Bone’s fantastic eye for detail is complemented by a clean and spare style of painting. The calm, uninhabited rooms he depicts allude to a slower, quieter way of life, inspired by heritage and days gone past. Windows and doorways suggest a particular interest in the life beyond the domestic interiors.

Bone’s interior scenes, with their strong contrast of light and shadows, can be considered a modern interpretation of the paintings by the Dutch artist Jan Vermeer. Frequent comparisons have also been made between Bone and the works of American painter Andrew Wyeth, with both taking particular inspiration from the expansive landscapes of New England.
