Pantone describe Marsala as ‘naturally robust and earthy wine red.’

Annually, Pantone declares a colour of the year forecasting which specific hue designers and consumers will all supposedly be using, wearing, and buying for the following 12 months.

With a name like Marsala, food becomes a dominant topic of discussion, yet Pantone refers to wine rather than the curry house favourite. This year’s choice has stirred up conflicting responses from the media with some calling it ‘royal’ and ‘sophisticated’, but others finding it ‘uninviting’ and ‘dull’.

Within art, décor and fashion, this elegant tone has always been a symbol of natural earthiness. The burgundy colour Marsala makes a grounded statement when used on its own and give a strong accent to many other colours.
