The Leighton House Museum is currently hosting an exhibition on Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema.
Alma-Tadema: At Home in Antiquity explores Lawrence Alma-Tadema’s fascination with domesticity in ancient life and in relation to his own domestic circumstances in 19th century London. His work reflected ideas, populated on stage and screen, of the aesthetics of antiquity.
The exhibition follows his life in the Netherlands and the UK. In 1870 Alma-Tadema moved to London to establish his highly successful career as an artist. But Tadema wasn’t the only artist in the family, this exhibition also showcases works from Tadema’s wife Laura and daughter Anna.

At Home in Antiquity is set in Leighton’s very own studio-house and includes In My Studio presented by Alma-Tadema to Leighton House as a token of his esteem. The art work is now in a private collection.
The exhibition is organised by the Fries Museum, located in Alma-Tadema’s home town of Leeuwarden. Following an exhibition at the Belvedere in Vienna, At Home with Antiquity comes to Leighton House Museum with over 100 works from public and private collections worldwide.
